The End of the World

Ooh, a 'last time' recap...

Rose was a strong start, but some cheap production values and shonky dialogue for Rose left nagging doubts...

RTD got this element so right: the absolute wonder and magic of the TARDIS, so taken for granted in JNT's time.

Welcome to The End Of The World!

it was an odd episode to watch, relief that we knew NuWho was a massive success, sad that we knew 9 was already leaving

Still probably Murray Gold's best theme arrangement?

I did replay it far to often when i got the sound track!

Yes, though by the time of the next episode Tennant's was the only name in contention, reported as 'in talks' IIRC on the day of ep3

The CGI this week is much better, I think we can breathe a sigh of relief that yes, the production values will cut it.

The procession of aliens is great fun. Would be good to see some of these alien delegates again if we ever get a return to Peladon.

The gift from the Adherents of the Repeated Meme doesn't half look like a Yeti control sphere.

I thought it was Hugo Boss

Cassandra is bloody great, but with all due respect to the Mill, it's Zoe Wanamaker who aces it.

Great gag that Cassandra thinks the jukebox is an ipod. I'd love one of those vintage jukeboxes!

Despite his reputation as a grump, Eccleston bopping away to Tainted Love does actually raise a smile.

9 has gained the reputation of being a rather bleak Doctor but he was quite fun really

Jabe the tree lady gives the Doctor a quick scan. Computer says no.

Rose meets a blue plumber.

RTD's flair for exotic names of places and species gets a 1st proper outing in this episode.

The blue plumber girl meets some metal spiders that seem to be up to no good.

being able to find a plumber, obviously science fiction

One that works on a Saturday night no less! Pure fantasy!

Is it me or is platform 9 employing child labour to valet park the TARDIS?

The Doctor dodges the question of where he comes from...

Rose has just realised about the TARDIS translation circuits.

and unlike Sarah the Doctor does not assume she has been hypnotised for asking the question, i never understood that

More of an oddity for Sarah to ask only after 3 seasons, less so for Rose on her 1st TARDIS trip?

"This is who I am, right here, right now, that's all that matters!" Touchy.

The Doctor upgrades Rose's phone so she can call home.

IIRC, RTD later said that phone call (from Jackie's POV) happens *before* the Auton attack in Rose.

The Host is fried by the sun, Jabe calls Rose a hooker.

She must have seen Billie's other series!

Another magical little scene as Jabe tells the Doctor it's remarkable he exists and how sorry she is... tantalising...

"Is it me or is it a bit nippy?"

More comic misunderstandings as Cassandra proposes mourning the Earth with a "traditional ballad"... by Britney Spears.

Rose has been knocked out by the Adherents and trapped in an observation room with the heat shield lowering...

"Oh well it would be you..." is a nice touch. Companion needing rescuing but deftly avoiding any feeling of being dated.

Cassandra tries to point the, er, finger at Boe. Talk to the Face!

i suspect Jack has heard worse over the years

The Doctor isn't fooled by Cassandra's Adherents. 5 billion years and it still comes down to money.

Cassandra does a runner, the Doctor needs to turn the engines back on. First he has to avoid some fans...

time for grumpy Eccleston joke

those fans are very Galaxy Quest! ;-)

For a change, the Time Lord has immaculate timing & raises the shields. Too late for Jabe & the Moxx, though...

The Doctor brings Cassandra back to face the music. (Not Britney, thankfully).

Rose pities Cassandra at the end. The Doctor? "Everything has its time, and everything dies."

The Earth is gone, so the Doctor takes Rose back to Earth for chips... and the truth about his (unnamed) planet.

He's the last of the Time Lords; there was a war and they lost. I think we can probably guess who the war was with...

Such a great scene that ending. Ooh, and a next time trailer, with victorians... and Charles Dickens!
