The Keys of Marinus

50dw50@50dw50 diddly dum, diddly dum...

50dw50@50dw50  i have always been quite fond of this one, good fun after boring old Marco Polo.

I love Marco Polo, so charming and has that real epic journey feel to it. Everything's still new, & they haven't quite slotted into their relationships with each other. It's the last "early" story to me; from here on in it starts being that ongoing series (and in truth this might be the first dud...!)

Episode One - The Sea of Death

Leaving Peking in the year 1289, the TARDIS arrives on the planet Marinus. Perhaps surprisingly, that's actually the 1st time we see the TARDIS arrive with the roll-back-and-mix fade in-out that we now take for granted. In the previous 4 adventures we just see it there.
50dw50@50dw50 its only a model.

Hartnell's wig is swept back very harshly, makes his hair look oddly short from the front.

The Doctor says he has a colour TV but it'll be out of action till about 1970. There's sea and sand but they're not in Southend.

Ian thinks he sees something move so they go outside to take a look.

Further up the beach, a group of torpedo-like one-man submersibles arrive.

The Doctor warns Susan against going for a swim.
50dw50@50dw50 when the audience discovers it is acid they will be shouting SWIM SUSAN SWIM!

As they explore, they fail to spot that there's a wetsuited figure shadowing them.

The beach is made of glass, not sand.

Maybe intense heat from an explosion melted the sand. Is this Skaro again?

It's written by that Terry Nation fella, so who knows...

Just as Susan's about to take a paddle...

...she knocks one of her shoes in the "water", and it dissolves.

Ian's quick to spot that the "water" is really acid. So the beach is glass because of the tidal acid washing up on it.

He kindly donates his boots to Susan. I'm sure the Doctor will appreciate that.

Won't Ian shred his feet now?

The wetsuited frogman examines the TARDIS lock, then scarpers as Susan approaches.

"If you'd had your shoes on, my boy, you could have lent her hers." Quite.

As Susan retrieves another pair of shoes from the TARDIS, she notices some flipper-like footprints.
50dw50@50dw50 Frobisher?

Apparently not...

Barbara, Ian and the Doctor have found one of the glass torpedoes.
It's cracked, meaning the acid seeped in...

...and killed the torpedo's passenger due to a small tear in his wetsuit. The acid didn't dissolve the torpedo man's wetsuit itself, though, hence why they're worn - but it means we still don't know what the Torpedo men *really* look like!
50dw50@50dw50 being melted alive by acid is really horrible, so are all the seas on this planet acid?

Susan's wandered off to the nearby pyramid...

...where her wetsuited shadow lurks, knife at the ready. Not friendly, then.

The Doctor theorizes that the sea of acid is a defence barrier.

This is a local pyramid for local people, it seems.

Susan is saved when her would-be attacker falls through a secret panel in the wall.

50dw50@50dw50 Dr Who's first Whitehall farce?

Mark@Th3DarkMark damn, the person flipping the wall is visible in shot!
Finlay HS@11thDoctorComic It's Clara. :P

Being charitable I always took it we're meant to glimpse them, to pique our curiosity...(!)

Bit of foreshadowing of the next story, with Barbara getting her history on about the "Indians of Central and Southern America."

Susan is pulled inside the buidling...

...and soon so is the Doctor!
50dw50@50dw50 shame they never did this as a Cushing movie, it needs a huge budget.

Ian & Barbara realize something's up.

Inside the pyramid, Susan is soon at the mercy of the wetsuited frogman...
50dw50@50dw50 the monster will not be igvoord... ignored... forget it.

But a hooded figure lurking in the background save her by knifing the frogman in the back. How jolly.

A mysterious figure in a Monk's outfit, eh?

Ian leaves Barbara and goes to explore, and soon he too is missing.

If Barbara can't beat them she might as well join them.

Ian has found the dead frogman.

Barbara and the Doctor are reunited with Susan.

Ian rescues the monk from another frogman...

...by shoving him down a shaft, where he falls into the acid sea.

Oh, when Ian does it, it's fine, Colin makes one little quip and suddenly it's not cool...

The "monk" is named Arbitan. He says he had to treat the travellers as potential enemies, and that his attackers are the Voord. It's been many years since the last Voord attack. Lucky the TARDIS turned up today, then, eh?

Considering what a big star he was at the time, George Coulouris fluffs easily twice as many lines as Hartnell. Coulouris is obviously from the Tom Baker school of thinking; scripts are suggestions not instructions!

Ian and Arbitan are followed by the last surviving member of the 4-Voord insurgence. How long till reinforcements join him?

Arbitan introduces the reunited travellers to his fantabulous contraption: the Conscience of Marinus.

At first the machine was a judge and jury that was never wrong...

...but the Marinusians, er, Marinitians, er... yeah, that lot, tinkered with it. It began to "influence the minds of men throughout the planet." I guess that left the women to sort out their mess. Typical.

Of course things went wrong, the people became placid, dependent on the machine.

A man named Yartek and his followers, the Voord, were able to exploit the pacifist population of Marinus.

50dw50@50dw50  or are fighting for the RIGHT TO HAVE FREE WILL AND NOT TO BE ENSLAVED!!! i'm with the Voord on this one.

Are the Voord just men like Arbitan under those suits, then?

Arbitan was able to remove the 5 key microcuits to scupper Yartek's dominance.

He kept 1 and scattered the others across the planet. Now he needs them back to boot up his modified machine to repel the Voord.

He sent his own daughter, but that was a year ago and he's lost contact with her. I think we can see where this is going.

But no, the travellers have declined to help Arbitan and headed back to the TARDIS. What a miserable bunch!

Except that when the Doctor tries to open up the TARDIS he finds there's an invisible barrier around his ship.

They hear Arbitan's voice, telling them that they can either stay on the island without food or water, or retrieve the Keys of Marinus.

Bit of a no brainer, really.

With no choice they set off to retrieve the keys, with the Doctor still griping at being blackmailed.

Arbitan gives them watch-like travel dials to travel to the locations of the Keys.

Barbara is rather too keen, and accidentally flits off ahead of the others.

As her friends follow, Arbitan is struck down by a Voord who stabs him in the back.

Hence he falls to the floor clutching his chest. Erm...
50dw50@50dw50 nothing like being back stabbed by a man in rubber...
When Ian, the Doctor and Susan arrive at their destination, they find Barbara's travel dial...

...there's blood on it!

Episode Two - The Velvet Web
50dw50@50dw50 They've arrived in Adric's bedroom by the looks of it

Despite Ian's concern, the Doctor is sure Barbara's okay, and the friends pass through a series of flashing lights to reach her.

He's not wrong...

She was only a few seconds ahead of them, but Barbara's got her feet well under the table here.

She just scratched her wrist when she got freaked out by the sensation of travelling and tried to tear the dial off.

Now she's being waited on hand and foot, quaffing grapes.

Susan fancies a new dress.

Ian wonders how much all this is going to set them back.

Their host is Altos, who tells them that they're in the city of Morphoton.
He pronounces Morphoton like MOREfertun, as if it's a little village somewhere in Midsommer!

You can tell it's the 60s; Altos' miniskirt is so short.

Altos wishes to fulfil Susan's every need.

He promises to rustle up a well kitted out lab for the Doctor, and departs.

The Doctor grows tired, and Susan is already asleep, so Barbara and Ian prepare to turn in too.

Cynical old Ian thinks Altos must be rich and powerful to be giving stuff away for free.
Barbara says they'll all feel different in the morning.

Ian noticed Altos didn't blink at all. Not surprised with those Angel-like sculptures.

Once they're all asleep, the wall carving's eyes light up...

...and a woman enters and places a device on their foreheads.

Barbara turns her head, dislodging the device from her forehead.
KrynoidPodCast@KrynoidPodCast Possible design flaw?

She finds her senses assaulted by light and sound, and passes out.

In the morning, the others wake before her.

They all have sore foreheads. Funny that.

Susan shows  off her new dress. They rustled that up quickly.

When Barbara awakes she has quite a different perspective from her fellow travellers.
50dw50@50dw50 like a one night stand in the cold light of morning.
Everything is is dirty and ruined.

What Susan thinks is a glass of orange juice is just a dirty old mug to Barbara.

Susan tries to show off her new dress, but it's just rags to Barbara.

Altos enters to interrupt Barbara's freakout and says he'll take her to their physicians.
KrynoidPodCast@KrynoidPodCast Altos has gone all pervy Bowie/Mayall on Babs's ass.

Barbara's having none of it though and does a runner.

Altos asks the others to stay put while he goes after her...

...but Barbara hides in a basement room.

She evades Altos but is locked inside.

Altos enters a secret room where he reports to his masters - creatures in jars that look like brains with eyes on stalks.
50dw50@50dw50 i think they are great, especially with the spooky voice.

The brains want to know who cocked up hypnotising the travellers. Altos points the finger at Sabetha, so the brains order her punished.

Sabetha is cast down into the basement room where Barbara tries to break through her conditioning.

Altos tells Ian that Barbara's been sedated, so the Doctor asks to see his lab.

It's an empty room, but the Doctor and Ian think they can see a cyclotron, and that a battered old mug is a scientific instrument that could fix the TARDIS.

When Barbara sees the medallion that Sabetha is fiddling with, she deduces that this is Arbitan's daughter.
50dw50@50dw50 she must have got her looks from Mrs Arbitan.

The brains begin to make plans for the travellers:
Ian will join the work party, in haulage & the Doctor can be put to work in a real lab, where he can work to increase the brain's powers. Susan can go into service like Sabetha.

Sabetha finally comes to her senses when Altos returns to capture Barbara...

...and she hits him over the head with a pot.

Barbara goes off to find the others and bumps into Ian.

But Ian is under the control of the brains, and takes her to their control room.

As Barbara has learned their secrets, she must be killed!

She breaks free... then breaks the brains' jars.
Mark@Th3DarkMark good old fashioned bit of violence to save the day!
50dw50@50dw50 had the Brains developed perspex then Babs would have been doomed!

Ian is freed from their control as the creatures die outside of their jars.

Are we sure this definitely isn't Skaro and these aren't proto-Daleks?

Reunited with the Doctor & Susan, Ian & Barbara watch as the freed slaves burn the city.

They're met by Sabetha and Altos, who was also one of Arbitan's agents.
50dw50@50dw50 it is odd when they already have three companions that Nation provides another 2 companions for this story, maybe Nation was worried about the lack of Doctor in later episodes?

Altos was despatched by Arbitan with his friend Eprin, but Eprin went on ahead to the civilised society in the city of Millenius.

They've retrieved the first key, meaning there are 3 left to recover, so they decide to split up. The Doctor will go on ahead to Millenius, and they arrange to meet in 5 days.

Hartnell: "Right, I'm off on holiday for a fortnight, here's some travel dials, good luck with it, tata!"

The Doctor is happy to entrust Susan's safety to Ian and Barbara; not sure that'd have been teh case even a few episodes ago.

Susan darts off ahead, and arrives first, in some sort of rowdy garden centre...
Mark@Th3DarkMark and Susan goes running off on her own again - never learns!

End of Part 2!
Charles Daniels@ukoddball and next onto the Screaming Jungle!!! I LOVE THIS STORY!

Episode Three - The Screaming Jungle

The reprise for The Screaming Jungle is different to last week's cliffhanger.

Barbara & Ian arrive, to find the cacophony has stopped.

Ian spots an archway and goes to explore with Altos and Sabetha.

Barbara and Susan decide to stay put and set up camp.

Barbara doesn't want to be treated like Dresden China, but Susan likes the way Ian looks out for them all.

Nice Liana...

Barbara frees Susan from the aggressive vegetation & they move off towards the archway.
Mark@Th3DarkMark Susan's crying, whimpering and screaming does get tiresome. She's no Romana...

Yes, she screams a lot in this story, it's a massive backwards step after the first 4 stories.

Barbara goes to investigate an idol despite Susan's warnings.

As Ian arrives, Barbara finds the Key, but is grabbed by the idol!

The idol swivels round, stealing Barbara away.

Ian sends Susan on with Altos & Sabetha...

...but not before Sabetha clocks that the key Barbara found is a fake.

Ian uses the gropey idol to go after Barbara.
50dw50@50dw50 shame the hands are not very statue-like.

Only Barbara's timely call saves him from the chop!
50dw50@50dw50  Ian fearful of a hovering chopper.

They find a doorway in the wall, and go inside...

Ian is nowhere to be seen and Barbara is ensnared in a net...

She's helpless as the spiky ceiling descends...
50dw50@50dw50 just how paranoid about thieves is the home owner?

Mark@Th3DarkMark you mean you haven't got those?

50dw50@50dw50 the house looking like a slum seems the best defence!

Ian struggles to break the bars that keep him from Barbara...

Their jailer is Darrius; Barbara must convince him they were sent by Arbitan.

As Barbara frees Ian, Darrius is attacked by a vicious vine!

Darrius is dying but warns them "When the whispering starts, it's death!"

Instead of giving them a straight answer as to where the key is he unhelpfully tells Ian "DE3O2."

I say unhelpfully, but you'd've thought science teacher Ian would've been hip to the chemical formula.
50dw50@50dw50 it is a good job they have an identical system on this planet that they use on Earth.

The code is not the combination to the safe.
Ian reads Darrius' diaries. Rude.

Seems Darrius was experimenting with accelerating the cycle of nature. What could possibly go wrong?

As the whispering starts, the plants attack, beginning to break through the window.

So did Darrius engineer the Krynoid, then?

Ian finally realizes it's a chemical formula and the key is found!

They use their travel dials to escape.

50dw50@50dw50 so will the jungle just grow and grow and destroy everything until it reaches the coast of the acid sea? Sleep well kiddies. Today I bred a super plant that will one day consume the continent, nuggets for tea then bed.

Ian and Barbara are out of the frying pan and into the... er, freezer!
End of Part 3!

Episode Four - The Snows of Terror
Completely different reprise from last week's cliffhanger here.

They're rescued by a furred figure. Are they back on the plain of Pamir?

Their rescuer, Vasar, is a bit intimidating, and not a little creepy.

Some fulfilling of the educational remit here; good advice re: circulation & frostbite!
50dw50@50dw50 and how to spot a potential rapist.

Vasor tells them he saw Altos but sent him on to the nearby village to look for Susan & Sabetha.
Ian asks for some furs, which Vasor will only exchange for his travel dial.

Vasor wants to fatten Barbara up. Don't like the sound of this...

Ian finds Altos lying in the snow, unconscious. How long has he been there?
50dw50@50dw50 without his trousers on!

Barbara finds the others' travel dials & Vasor admits he left Susan & Sabetha in a cave & robbed Altos.
50dw50@50dw50 this is great, rapists, ice warriors, men freezing in their pants, furs, perfect teatime show(!)

As Altos revives, Ian realizes Vasor stuffed hs manbag with meat to attract the wolves.

Barbara fends off Vasor, and Ian & Altos return.
50dw50@50dw50 thats really sinister, they would never put a character like that into the modern show.

Sabetha & Susan find it impossible to get a fire going so retreat further into the mountain.

Ian forces Vasor to lead them to the cave, but by the time they get there the two women have moved further into the cave in search of warmth.

CAF's brave, that rope-bridge looks well dodgy. Mind you, it's probably only a foot off the floor really.
50dw50@50dw50 it would still hurt if the actors fell off it, Nation seems to have had a thing about crossing caverns. Lost Tardis check, long journey check, sinister jungle check, need to find something so they can leave check...

Staple B-movie jeopardy fare, I guess!

50dw50@50dw50 true, for a 25 minute story the cavern hints at padding.

Vasor pleads with them to turnback, saying there are "demons" in the ice.

When the travellers are reunited on the other side of the bridge...

...Vasor makes his move.

That "ice" is not terribly convincing is it? Love the Ice Guards though.

Altos must really feel the draft in that miniskirt.

The real Key is inside a large block of ice. It's melting but too slowly.

As Ian & Altos try to rig a new bridge...

...Barbara turns up the heat to free the key.

She's accidentally revived the Ice Guards too, though!
And they've woken up cranky!

Ian brings the house down to slow the Ice Guards while they shuffle over the bridge.

One of the Ice Guards takes a tumble, and the travellers get away.
They recover their travel dials from Vasor...

...and though he tries a last ditch attempt to take Susan hostage, they leave him to get his compeuppance from the Ice Guards.

Ian arrives in a new city and finds first a dead body, then the key!

Of course, before he can lay his hands on it, he's knocked out. That didn't take long!

The Key's been nicked & Ian's fitted up for murder. Business as usual! End of part 4!

Episode 5 - Sentence of Death

This is a Sentence of Death. This Sentence isn't.

This whole reprise is from a completely different angle.
50dw50@50dw50 with all the blows Ian took to the head i would be amazed if he did not get pugilistic dementia in later life.

"My name is Tarron." Of course it is, this *is* a Terry Nation script.
Mark@Th3DarkMark ALMOST Tarrant.....

Tarron is an interrogator, and immediately accuses Ian of stealing the Key & killing the guard.
50dw50@50dw50 is this where it will start to become a bit dull? stay tuned!

Bad news for Ian; the justice system here means guilty until proven innocent.
50dw50@50dw50 at least Ian has the comfort of knowing that this city will soon be destroyed by the advancing jungle of doom.
Nice of you to join us, Mr. Hartnell!

They're all at it the next few stories. WH goes 1st, then Susan in the Aztecs, Barbara in The Sensorites (The Sensorites keep her hostage on the ship, because they couldn't possibly do it *on their own planet*!!) and Ian in The Reign Of Terror

Much easier to be 'Doctor-lite' in the days of longer stories, where they can dip out and not miss a whole story!

Ian's trial begins; he better have a good lawyer!
50dw50@50dw50 he is being judged by the Russian Orthodox Church?

Mark@Th3DarkMark as are we all.....

Donald Pickering a class apart as always.
50dw50@50dw50 nice of the court to provide nervous prisoners with a urinal though.

The Doctor buys time - 2 days - to master the laws of Millenius. Where's K9 when you need him?

While Altos & Sabetha act as research assistants, the Doctor interrogates the interrogator.
50dw50@50dw50 the people in this city are very polite not to point out that these strangers are wearing barking mad clothes!

The Doctor's theory is the Key couldn't have left the room; Tarron's is simpler: Ian = Murderer.

The Doctor persuades Barbara & Susan to do a Crimewatch reconstruction.

And whacks Barbara in the process.

They deduce that the relief guard was the killer, but have no proof.

It's Lady Peinforte herself, Fiona Walker! Cast as a villain both times! I'd take it personally if I were her! She's quite cunning here; just bonkers in Silver Nemesis.

Seems Kala is the brains here; the jumpy Ayden is a liability.
50dw50@50dw50 after the big hit Nation had with attempted rape he now introduces wife beating for the kiddies!

Prosecutor Eyesen is pulling the strings.

At the trial Eyesen goes on the attack.

The Doctor tries an audacious ruse...

...Sabetha uses the fake Key to point the finger at Ayden, who outs himself as the killer.

Before Ayden can give a confession in full, he's killed...

...much to Kala's crocodile tears.

The Key's still missing & with Ayden's dying words "they made me do it", Ian's still in the frame!

Even worse, Susan's been kidnapped to coerce the silence of the travellers!

Worst prank call ever.

Episode Six - The Keys of Marinus (not to be confused with the complete story "The Keys of Marinus")
50dw50@50dw50 they all shrug "pah, keep her"

Real steel from Barbara now. She determines to find Susan themselves so the Doctor isn't distracted from Ian's defence.

Kala keeps up appearances...

...then checks on her prisoner. She's a wrong 'un.

But Kala dropped a clanger when she referred to Susan's call...

...and Barbara has her bang to rights!
50dw50@50dw50 she is brilliant, I adore Barbara.

The evidence is locked away for the night...

But it isn't over; Kala gives a sworn statement naming Ian as her accomplice!

Luckily the Doctor has rumbled the final piece of the puzzle, and sets a trap.

Eyesen had to come back for the mace...

...as that's where the Key's hidden!

An early example of namedropping from the Doctor. "Phyrro? Met him down the pub once..."

So were Eyesen & Kala in the employ of Yartek? Or did they have their own designs on the Conscience?
The travellers depart, leaving Tarron with a difficult report to complete.

"It's only a model" again.

Oh crumbs, back round Arbitan's gaff, Altos is at the mercy of Yartek, leader of the alien Voord...

Yartek orders Altos killed to call Sabetha's bluff.
The TARDIS crew aren't far behind.

Having let the travellers go round the different zones of the Crystal Maze Marinus for him, Yartek has collected all but one of the keys.

He fits them into the Conscience.

Yartek tries to kid Ian & Susan that he is a wounded Arbitan.
50dw50@50dw50 worst disguise EVER!

Yartek is confident of a win here.
50dw50@50dw50 so confident he apparently takes a selfie.

The other Voord are so excited about it they stumble comically, as is their custom on the eve of a victory.

But Ian has given Yartek the old switcheroo with the fake key from Krynoid town, and the Conscience computer blows up in his face!

The day is saved and Yartek & the Voord killed. Er, hurrah?

"I don't believe man was made to be controlled by machines. Machines can make laws..."

"...but they cannot preserve justice. Only human beings can do that."

It does grate when Susan calls it "Tardis" not "The TARDIS", but I guess at the time this was 'right'.

All's well that ends well, and they're off again.

Feels odd for this era that there's no real lead into the next story
