1.05 The Enemy Within

The Enterprise does look absolutely gorgeous with the new FX shots.

Sulu's worried about freezing his space dog overnight.

1 of the geologists has been injured & is covered in weird space dust that seems to disagree with the transporter.

Now they're having trouble beaming Kirk aboard. Get it together, Scotty.

Kirk feels a certain weakness. In his groin area, knowing him.

But after they've left, ANOTHER Kirk appears!

This 2nd Kirk has his own evil theme tune and evil guyliner, so we know he must be evil.

I've complained before about Shatner's voice being too low in the mix on the DVD but sounds fine on Blu Ray.

Seems pretty odd that we get the Captain's log explaining what's happened here. Works though.

Kirk goes for a lie down but doesn't invite Janice to join him, so we know he's not feeling well.

Evil Kirk goes to sick bay and demands brandy from Bones, then swigs from the bottle en route to the bridge.

No one objects either because (1) they won't question the Captain or (2) Kirk does this all the time. I suspect 2.

Scotty shows Kirk what's happened to Sulu's space dog (not a euphemism).

Sulu's space dog has been split in two! (Also not a euphemism).

Evil Kirk lurks in Janice's bedroom and tries to force himself on her, but she's able to scratch his face and call for help.

Evil Kirk goes on the run, having hurt his knuckles thumping the technician that came to Janice's aid.

Janice reports what happened, so to handle it sensitively, Kirk himself goes to interview her.

But something's obviously not right. Kirk's face isn't scratched. Spock concludes there's an imposter aboard.

Really, Spock? An imposter? Even though you know what happened to the space dog?

So they can't bring up Sulu & co. by transporter. Something wrong with the shuttlecraft?

Wouldn't all this be cleared up a lot quicker if they had CCTV on the Enterprise? Or just scanned for lifeforms?

Spock tells Kirk he doesn't have the right to appear vulnerable in front of the crew.

Kirk is becoming increasingly indecisive and ineffective.

However he does make the decision to tip off Evil Kirk that he needs to cover up his scratches. Duh.

"IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'MMMM CAPTAIN KIRK!!!!!!!" Shatner turns it up to 11. Possibly even 12.

Evil Kirk thumps another crewmember and steals his hand phaser. At least he stil has his foot phaser, I guess.

The 2 Kirks confront one another in engineering, where Spock gets the drop on Evil Kirk.

Seems neither Kirk can survive without the other...

The transporter's completely screwed. Bet Scotty has it fixed in the next ten minutes or so.

Down on planet Chilly Willy, Sulu's phoning for some takeaway coffee. Seems there's one planet Starbucks hasn't reached.

Scotty claims he can't fix the transporter in any less than a week. Whatever.

Sulu is obsessed with getting that coffee.

Kirk fears his 'negative' self, but Spock & Bones know he needs that side of himself.

Guess what, they've managed to fix the transporter. Spock proposes testing on animals. Unethical or what!

The test isn't a success; when they try to recombine the space dog, the shock kills it. Verdict? "He's dead, Jim."

Bones has reservations but Spock thinks Kirk is hard enough to take it.

Sulu, still coffee-less, is almost frozen to death now.

Evil Kirk slaps on some concealer and swaps shirts with regular Kirk. The match isn't even over or anything.

But Evil Kirk only gets to sit in the big chair for a matter of minutes. "You know who I am!"

After Evil Kirk's failed attempt at the old switcheroo, Spock & Bones bung both Kirks in the transporter...

Seems to have worked! Sulu and his fellow ice cubes can now be beamed aboard.

And it's straight back to work for Janice, too.

"The imposter had some interesting qualities, wouldn't you say?" Spock smirks at her. You what?

TTFN! K.
