Peter Purves narrates the BBC Soundtrack, and starts us off...
...as the Doctor, Steven & Dodo arrive on an unnamed planet.

Dodo & Steven bicker as the Doctor wanders off to explore & take some scientific readings.

Dodo is frightened by one of the Savages and Steven rushes to her rescue.
The Doctor invites the Savages to come out...
...but they disappear when a couple of futuristically uniformed guards approach.
It seems that the Doctor is expected! The guards know of his travels through time.
Not sure they expected his "Reacting Vibrator", mind you.
Steven & Dodo are chased back to the TARDIS as the Savages bombard them with rocks & spears.
They're rescued by one of the guards.
The TARDIS travellers are reunited inside the nearby city...
...where the leader, Jano, tells of how they have charted the Doctor's travels.
50dw50@50dw50 is Jano in black face, all the pictures look very dark
It seems that way to me, yes - so at least one point where the loss of the visuals is an advantage!

Yes, definitely!

Two of the security types, Exorse & Edal, hunt the Savages.
Dodo & Steven are given a tour of the city by Avon. Wait, what?

The guards pursue Nanina into the ravine...
...observed by an anxious Chal.

Chal should have kept his mouth shut, the guards capture Nanina with their light guns.
Jano befins to explain to the Doctor how their civilisation is made possible by a discovery of theirs...
...they can distill life energy and impart it to their people.

Dodo begins to ask some awkward questions about the Savages.
Nanina is brought into the city, and taken to a control room where a scientist works on the Savages.

i like that Dodo does the exploring, she is rather good in this, Steven seems rather gullible in comparison

Jano continues to sell the Doctor the advantages of their society. "We can make the beautiful girl more beautiful still!"

"the ugly more ugly, the stupid more stupid... hang on a sec let me think about this one"

It's soon clear the figure coming towards her is an exhausted husk trying to stagger outside.
Elsewhere, Senta & his technicians prepare to drain Nanina's life energy...
Steven becomes anxious about Dodo's absence. She's always disappearing mid-story. Let's hope she cuts that out in her next adventure... He bursts into the council chamber to tell the Doctor that Dodo's vanished.
"Well, I really don't know what all this fuss is about." Hartnell gives it some "BOVVERED!"

Dodo interrupts the brain drain, and is captured.

Nanina is rescued in the nick of time!

He sould see if they have records of his travels to Troy, Paris and Kembel while he's there...
The Doctor's appalled at the treatment of the Savages. "They are human beings like you and me." Eh?

Chal tells his fellow Savage, Tor, that revenge is no good. Maybe not so Savage after all?
The Doctor condemns Jano's society. "So your rewards are only for the people that agree with you?" Rings a bell.
He pulls no punches, comparing the Elders' exploitation of the Savages to the menace of the Daleks.

And comes after John Wiles' attempts to sideline/replace Hartnell, disappearing him in Masterplan, making him invisible in Toymaker.

Senta's reluctant to subject the Doctor to the brain drain but Jano is determined to harness his energy.
The Doctor seems resistant to the process at first, but Senta ramps up the power & the drain begins...

Usually gathered energy's distributed amongst many, but Jano alone will absorb the Doctor's life force.

Chal orders Tor to keep watch while he goes to the recovering Nanina, who's tended to by Dodo & Steven.
One of the Savages gives away the tunnel down which Chal has led Dodo & Steven, and is cursed by Nanina.

Jano is excited to get a bit of the Doctor inside him.

It's definitely a story that suffers overall. On audio it's thin stuff; the moral outrage & Jaeger as the Doctor, Steven's exit, but little else.

Senta releases "time traveller number one" to join the Savages.
Steven & Dodo are overjoyed to see the Doctor but soon realize something is wrong.
Steven & Dodo get the Doctor to the relative safety of the Savages' cave.
Steven goes back to delay the guards, but Edal and Jano are nearby.
Dodo & Chal make slow progress with the drained Doctor.

Dodo & Chal make slow progress with the drained Doctor.
Soon, Jano comes to them. The Doctor has realized that Jano has come round to his way of thinking...
The Doctor has his energy back, but Jano has been left with just enough of his conscience.
TheSavages storm the city and destroy the brain drain machine, much to the Doctor's - and Jano's - delight!
The Doctor tells Jano that the Elders must live together with the Savages. Jano thinks it will require a mediator, an outsider to lead them.
The Doctor says it's "utterly impossible" for him to stay, but Chal has someone else in mind: Steven!

Steven, encouraged by the Doctor, reluctantly agrees to stay, saddening Dodo.
The Doctor and Dodo leave for their next - and for one of them, last - adventure!
TTFN! K.
