The Savages

Peter Purves narrates the BBC Soundtrack, and starts us off... the Doctor, Steven & Dodo arrive on an unnamed planet.
50dw50@50dw50 The joy of these sound tracks was that narrating them totally changed Purves's attitude towards Who. Quarry alert, quarry alert!

Dodo & Steven bicker as the Doctor wanders off to explore & take some scientific readings.

50dw50@50dw50 "the Doctor has no idea of time" lovely line from Dodo, she is very bitchy to Steven though hinting he should be his own man.

Mark@OdysseusMW  'you're a grown man - or are you?' BURN!

Davad@davadsteel This sets up Steven's departure. Dodo chiding him about needing The Doctor's permission. Time to man up Mr Taylor!

The Doctor is observed by some men hiding in the bushes. Oh dear.
50dw50@50dw50 how come they have not spotted the bloke playing the cello on the hill?

Dodo is frightened by one of the Savages and Steven rushes to her rescue.

The Doctor invites the Savages to come out...

...but they disappear when a couple of futuristically uniformed guards approach.

It seems that the Doctor is expected! The guards know of his travels through time.

Not sure they expected his "Reacting Vibrator", mind you.

Steven & Dodo are chased back to the TARDIS as the Savages bombard them with rocks & spears.

They're rescued by one of the guards.

The TARDIS travellers are reunited inside the nearby city...

...where the leader, Jano, tells of how they have charted the Doctor's travels.
50dw50@50dw50 is Jano in black face, all the pictures look very dark

It seems that way to me, yes - so at least one point where the loss of the visuals is an advantage!

Chris Cwej@chriscwej it's also fortunate they don't keep the working title: "The White Savages".

Yes, definitely!

The Elders give the Doctor a swanky new cloak.
50dw50@50dw50  They have given Dodo diamonds, no wonder she buggers off in the next story, she is rich! I like that grumpy Steven knows it is all to good to be true! Good that Hartnell sounds like he is not convinced by all this pleasent stuff even if the script does not spin it that way.

Mark@OdysseusMW he probably hadn't read the script...

50dw50@50dw50 he probably could not remember the script!

Two of the security types, Exorse & Edal, hunt the Savages.

Dodo & Steven are given a tour of the city by Avon. Wait, what?

he'll sort out those savages!

The guards pursue Nanina into the ravine...

...observed by an anxious Chal.
50dw50@50dw50 there is some rather over the top acting from the savages, maybe acting through the make up?

Chal should have kept his mouth shut, the guards capture Nanina with their light guns.

Jano befins to explain to the Doctor how their civilisation is made possible by a discovery of theirs...

...they can distill life energy and impart it to their people.
Simon Threadgold@dimwittedly "You see, Doctor, we discovered we were utter arseholes." "Hm, hm, I see. Planet of the Tories, then. Hm!"

Dodo begins to ask some awkward questions about the Savages.

Nanina is brought into the city, and taken to a control room where a scientist works on the Savages.
50dw50@50dw50 i like all the moaning about other peoples jobs, makes it more real somehow.
Dodo slips off the beaten track to see what's been kept off the tour...
i like that Dodo does the exploring, she is rather good in this, Steven seems rather gullible in comparison

Jano continues to sell the Doctor the advantages of their society. "We can make the beautiful girl more beautiful still!"

"the ugly more ugly, the stupid more stupid... hang on a sec let me think about this one"

Dodo is frozen with terror as one of the Savages appears in the city and lurches towards her!

50dw50@50dw50 the companions are really taking the lead, giving Hartnell a rest i suppose.

It's soon clear the figure coming towards her is an exhausted husk trying to stagger outside.

Elsewhere, Senta & his technicians prepare to drain Nanina's life energy...

Steven becomes anxious about Dodo's absence. She's always disappearing mid-story. Let's hope she cuts that out in her next adventure... He bursts into the council chamber to tell the Doctor that Dodo's vanished.

"Well, I really don't know what all this fuss is about." Hartnell gives it some "BOVVERED!"
50dw50@50dw50  "yes it's a... hospital" he says not sounding sinister at all.
50dw50@50dw50 Steven really has a low opinion of Dodo, makes you wonder why he named a daughter after her.

Dodo interrupts the brain drain, and is captured.

Dodo threatens to smash the machinery.
50dw50@50dw50 i am glad that Dodo puts up a fight, she should have been made leader not Steven.

Nanina is rescued in the nick of time!

The inept tour guides are punished...
50dw50@50dw50 Avon gets sentenced to exile on Cygnus Alpha.

...and Nanina is dragged away in a rather undignified manner...
50dw50@50dw50 "Something for the dads", there...

Simon Threadgold@dimwittedly New most wanted missing episode. Sorry Power of the Daleks Ep1.

The Doctor tells Steven & Dodo the Elders have some interesting archives he wants to search.

He sould see if they have records of his travels to Troy, Paris and Kembel while he's there...

The Doctor's appalled at the treatment of the Savages. "They are human beings like you and me." Eh?

50dw50@50dw50 half human on his mothers side remember!
Simon Threadgold@dimwittedly "... human beings like you." "And you, Doctor." "No, my boy, I'm not human." "What?" "Oh, alright, I'll explain. You see..."

Mark@OdysseusMW ha! I also tend to think that this early in his interactions with humans he doesn't want to tell them about the TLs.

50dw50@50dw50 nice bit of moral outrage from Dr Who, the character has changed so much since his first story

Chal tells his fellow Savage, Tor, that revenge is no good. Maybe not so Savage after all?

While Steven assures the Savages that he's on their side...

The Doctor condemns Jano's society. "So your rewards are only for the people that agree with you?" Rings a bell.

He pulls no punches, comparing the Elders' exploitation of the Savages to the menace of the Daleks.

Simon Threadgold@dimwittedly Not many can do "violently intimidating lapel grabbing" like Hartnell.

50dw50@50dw50 after this and the Time Destructor no wonder he had to regenerate in a few stories time

And comes after John Wiles' attempts to sideline/replace Hartnell, disappearing him in Masterplan, making him invisible in Toymaker.

Mark@OdysseusMW his human half couldn't take it all...

Senta's reluctant to subject the Doctor to the brain drain but Jano is determined to harness his energy.

The Doctor seems resistant to the process at first, but Senta ramps up the power & the drain begins...
50dw50@50dw50 his vitality is down to 25! the fiends!

Usually gathered energy's distributed amongst many, but Jano alone will absorb the Doctor's life force.
50dw50@50dw50 the greedy sod fancies being Dr Who, the ultimate cosplayer?

Chal orders Tor to keep watch while he goes to the recovering Nanina, who's tended to by Dodo & Steven.

Tor proves useless and Dodo & Steven have to flee when Exorse & Edal burst into the cave.

Nanina denies all knowledge of the travellers, but Exorse starts to throw his weight around.

One of the Savages gives away the tunnel down which Chal has led Dodo & Steven, and is cursed by Nanina.

Exorse uses his light gun to search the darkened tunnels, as Steven, Dodo & Chal hide.

Steven is able to use Dodo's mirror to reflect the light beam and freeze Exorse! Go team!
50dw50@50dw50 Steven growing a pair now so he can earn his leadership exit later

Jano is excited to get a bit of the Doctor inside him.
50dw50@50dw50 part three suffers as it appears to be quite a visual episode.

It's definitely a story that suffers overall. On audio it's thin stuff; the moral outrage & Jaeger as the Doctor, Steven's exit, but little else.

50dw50@50dw50 Nanina fancies a bloke in uniform and changes the history of the planet.

Chal leads Steven back to the city, where he overcomes the guards & gets them inside.
Senta is concerned that Jano may have overdosed after inhaling "essence of Doctor Who"...

The effect on Jano is most unexpected - it's made him talk like Professor Yaffle off Bagpuss!

Senta releases "time traveller number one" to join the Savages.

Steven & Dodo are overjoyed to see the Doctor but soon realize something is wrong.

They're trapped in the corridor, with gas pouring in, and guards looming...

Jano releases the lock, allowing them to escape outside.

Edal accuses Jano of being a traitor, as Steven fights off the guards.
Steven & Dodo get the Doctor to the relative safety of the Savages' cave.

Steven goes back to delay the guards, but Edal and Jano are nearby.

Dodo & Chal make slow progress with the drained Doctor.

The Savages argue about how to treat their prisoners. Nanina prevents the others from killing.

Steven arrives back at the cave, but with the Elders' guards hot on his heels.

Unexpectedly, the Doctor recovers enough to instruct Steven that Jano must not be harmed.

The Doctor's strength gathers and he resolves to destroy the brain drain machine.

Soon, Jano comes to them. The Doctor has realized that Jano has come round to his way of thinking...

The Doctor has his energy back, but Jano has been left with just enough of his conscience.

Exorse takes command of the Elders, declaring Jano a traitor who has gone over to the Savages.

TheSavages storm the city and destroy the brain drain machine, much to the Doctor's - and Jano's - delight!

Steven makes a stand against Edal, and the day is saved.

The Doctor tells Jano that the Elders must live together with the Savages. Jano thinks it will require a mediator, an outsider to lead them.

The Doctor says it's "utterly impossible" for him to stay, but Chal has someone else in mind: Steven!
50dw50@50dw50 Nanina and Dodo did far more but Steven gets the job, it hardly seems fair!

Steven, encouraged by the Doctor, reluctantly agrees to stay, saddening Dodo.

The Doctor and Dodo leave for their next - and for one of them, last - adventure!
